About

I'm Aart Goossens. I build SweatStack from Bygstad, Vestland, Norway. My work is inspired by Norway's tradition of innovation in training.

I've been working at the intersection of sports data and software for 20 years. Before SweatStack I helped build Sport Data Valley, the national sports data infrastructure in the Netherlands. I've started and contributed to a handful of open source projects, including GoldenCheetah. I've consulted for a number of training startups, and most recently was CTO at Entalpi.

I've been an athlete since I was a kid. Not very good at the early ones (gymnastics, football), slightly better at the later ones (cross-country running, rowing, cycling, XC skiing). That's the reason any of this exists.

Why SweatStack

In most of the projects I worked on, a big chunk of the initial phase was building the same stuff: loading FIT files, Garmin integrations, setting up databases, authentication. As a data engineer those tasks were interesting in themselves, but the real interesting parts only came after that. It sometimes felt like throwing away months of runway.

I also had a lot of small side-project ideas that never came to fruition, because the cost of getting started was just too high.

When I took some time off after stepping down as CTO of Entalpi, I built a generic backend for myself, just to test and develop ideas. It worked well enough that I decided to turn it into the product: That's SweatStack.
